Steve Ashmore's scratch built Piranha, powered by Saito 1.15, wingspan 72 inches, length 64 inches, weight 14 lbs. Modifications include hull sponsons to deflect bow spray from hitting the prop.Hull is light ply and foam with 2 oz fiberglass cloth painted with System Three Orcas White and Lopez Blue water base WR-LPU. Wing is two panel construction with 7/8 inch carbon fiber joiner tube, balsa ribs, spruce spar, and covered with HobbyKing covering film. Original plans by Don McGovern circa 1966. Steve won First Prize at the 2018 North West Model Hobby Expo due to his outstanding craftsmanship. Maiden flight went well with stable take-off and easy flight control.

Andrews Bay resident ducks that often visit our float fly. All birds are cautious, but curious of model planes. They retain their fear of natural preditors, especially dogs not on leash, but are still spooked by visible animals or upwind scents.
